Moreover, since the magnification is varied mainly by the movement of the second lens group as mentioned above, the lateral magnification of the second lens group at the shortest focal length extremity is set to be small, as specified in relationship 2 above, in comparison with a conventional zoom lens having a relatively small zoom ratio.
If the lateral magnification of the second lens group specified in relationship 2 is smaller than the lower limit, it is impossible to obtain a high zoom ratio without increasing the displacement of the second lens group. The increase in the displacement of the second lens group leads to an increase in the size of the zoom lens system. Conversely, if the lateral magnification of the second lens group is above the upper limit specified in relationship 2 , the lateral magnification met is too large to correct the fluctuation of the aberrations caused during the zooming operation, since the lateral magnification m2 T at the longest focal length extremity is substantially identical to a product of the lateral magnification m2w at the shortest focal length extremity and the zoom ratio i.
